You can often find me quoting Shakespeare right before bed. Usually my own version of Hamlet that goes something like: To eat or not to eat? Don’t know about you but I get an awful case of munchies before bed. Sometimes my choices do not agree with me and keep me up at night (like 2 kids and a snoring partner isn’t enough).

Digestion is a terribly complicated process that requires quite a lot of energy, and for some folks, eating before bed can make it significantly more difficult to fall asleep. This is especially true with fatty food, which takes extra time to digest, or food that is very high in sugar or carbohydrates, which will probably spike your insulin and provide an unwanted energy boost.

So, if you are like minded, pre-bedtime snacker like me, there are some foods with nutritional properties that can help maximize the benefits of your sleep.

For foods that help you sleep better tonight, here are few favorites to try:

1) Cherries
Cherries are one of the very few foods that contain melatonin, which is probably the most widely used sleep supplement on shelves. It comes in pill form and while this concerns some people, melatonin is actually an all-natural antioxidant, and it may protect against cancer, stroke, and heart disease.

2) Dark Leafy Greens
Kale, spinach, collard greens, and Swiss chard are all fantastic sources of the elusive mineral magnesium. Not only can magnesium cut your risk of diabetes and of heart attacks, but it’s also a fantastic sleep aid. Not interested in eating salad so late at night? Some avocado, a banana, a square of dark chocolate, or a handful of nuts or pumpkin seeds are terrific sources of magnesium as well.

3) Kiwi fruit
A surprising number of studies have concluded that kiwi fruit helps people go to sleep more quickly and stay asleep for longer. In fact, a study out of Taiwan’s Taipei Medical School found sleep onset to occur 35 percent more quickly after eating two kiwi fruit an hour before bed. Why? One theory is that kiwi fruit is pretty high in serotonin, which helps to regulate the sleep cycle and improve mood.

4) Chamomile
An old standard, chamomile tea has been used since ancient times to beat insomnia, and while its effectiveness as a sleep aid hasn’t been widely researched in humans, animal studies have shown promise for chamomile as a natural relaxant. (Valerian tea is another good bet.) Downside: It might not be very filling if you’re craving calories!

5) Yogurt
Yogurt is very high in calcium, and among other things, this mineral helps to support deep, REM sleep by enabling the brain to convert tryptophan, a common amino acid, into melatonin. Despite popular belief, tryptophan isn’t especially high in turkey, and can be found in equal or greater amounts in bacon, tofu, cheese, oat bran, and even chicken. Eat plenty of calcium with your protein, and it’ll increase your chances of restful sleep.

Some people will be kept awake if they eat before sleep no matter what they put on their plate. For those folks, there’s every reason to head to bed on empty. But on the other hand, if you have difficulty sleeping, one (or more) of the foods above just might do the trick. Dig in and rest up. I shall start with chocolate tonight and tell you how that goes.

What is the most common cause of cancer?

Cancer is the abnormal growth of cells. There are around 100 types of cancer. The most common types of cancer are -  Men: Lung, esophagus, stomach, oral and pharyngeal cancers. Women: Cervix and breast cancers.

Cancer has many possible causes, the prominent ones being -
Genetics: Certain cancers run in families. For example, certain mutations in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes greatly increase a person's risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer.

Smoking: Cigarette smoking accounts for around 30% of all cancer deaths. It is linked with increased risk of these cancers - lungs, larynx, oral cavity, nose and sinuses, esophagus, stomach, pancreas, cervix, kidney, bladder, ovary, colon, rectum and acute myeloid leukemia. Chewing of tobacco, a carcinogen, is linked to dental caries, gingivitis, oral leukoplakia, and oral cancer.

Diet and Lifestyle: Research shows that a poor diet and not having an active lifestyle are the key factors that can increase a person's risk of developing cancer.

Three things to keep in mind in order to stay cancer free:-

  • Get to and stay at a healthy weight throughout your life.
  • Be physically active on a regular basis.
  • Make healthy food choices with a focus on plant-based foods.

What are the foods that up the risk of developing cancer?
Some cancers like that of the stomach have a more direct relationship with food. Foods which should be consumed in moderation to avoid the incidence of cancer are  -

  • Processed meats such as bacon, sausages, lunch meats and hot dogs.
  • Choose fish, poultry, or beans instead of red meat (beef, pork, and lamb).
  • If you eat red meat, choose lean cuts and eat smaller portions.
  • Prepare meat, poultry, and fish by baking, broiling, or poaching rather than by frying or charbroiling.

What are the preventive foods that guard against cancer?
In accordance with the most common types of cancers that our country suffers from, the following foods can help:

Oral Cancer: A diet rich in green and yellow vegetables and proper oral hygiene has been shown to offer protection against oral cancer.

Breast Cancer: Reduction of high calorie foods, increased intake of fruits and vegetables and regular physical activity is preventive.

Lung Cancer: Avoid tobacco and stay free from environmental pollutants. Increase intake of vegetables, fruits and beta carotene.

Stomach Cancer:Diets high in fruits and vegetables particularly raw vegetables, citrus fruits, and possibly allium vegetables (onions, leeks, garlic etc.), foods with high levels of carotenoid, high vitamin C intake and consumption of green tea helps prevent stomach cancers.

What foods help in healing cancer and how?
Good nutrition is a key to good health. Foods which are rich in Vitamin C, Beta-carotene and Lycopene are known to protect DNA from damages. According to research, here are the top 15 cancer-fighting foods -

Apple: Apple contains quercetin, epicatechin, anthocyanins and triterpenoids which have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that help to lower the risk ofcancer specifically Colorectal cancers. The apple peel is the most nutritious as the majority of Quercetin (80%) is found in it. Other cancers in which apples are known to heal are lungs, breast and stomach.

Blueberries:Blueberries have great antioxidant power, due to the presence of many phytochemicals and flavonoids like Anthocyanins, Ellagic acid and Urolithin. These are known to decrease free radical damage to DNA that leads to cancer. They also decrease the growth and stimulate self-destruction of mouth, breast, colon and prostate cancer cells.

Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, Green Cabbage, Cauliflower, White Turnip, Kale, Green Collard:The Glucosinolates present in them is converted into isothiocyanates and indoles on consumption, which decreases inflammation, one of the risk factors ofcancer. Beta-carotene promotes cell communication that helps control abnormal cell growth.

Cherries: Both sweet and tart cherries are a good source of fiber, vitamin C, and potassium. The dark red color comes from anthocyanins, which are antioxidants.

Cranberries: They are high on dietary fiber and vitamin C. They're very high in antioxidant power, most of which comes from phytochemicals like anthocyanins, proanthocyanidins and flavonols, ursolic acid, benzoic acid and hydroxycinnamic acid. Proanthocyanidins and ursolic acid decrease growth and increase self-destruction of several types of cancer in cell studies.

Grapefruit: An 18th century hybrid of the pummelo and sweet orange. It is grown mainly in the Americas. Its name derives from the fruit's appearance as it grows: grape-like clusters on trees. Grapefruit contains these naringenin and other flavonoids like limonin and other limonoids, beta-carotene and lycopene (pink and red varieties). Foods containing lycopene lower the risk of prostate cancer.

Green Tea: Since ancient times, tea has been used as both beverage and medicine. Both black and green teas contain numerous active ingredients, including polyphenols and flavonoids, which are potent antioxidants. One class of flavonoids called catechins has recently become the focus of widespread study for their anti-cancer potential. Tea is the best source of catechins in the human diet, and green tea contains about three times the quantity of catechins found in black tea. In laboratory studies, green tea has been shown to slow or completely prevent cancerdevelopment in colon, liver, breast and prostate cells. Other studies involving green tea have shown similar protective effects in tissues of the lung, skin and digestive tract.

Winter Squash/Pumpkins: They contain Alpha and Beta carotene which is converted to Vitamin A inside the body. The yellow pigmented lutein, zeaxanthin helps to filter high energy ultra violet rays that can damage our eye's lens and retina. Lab studies suggest that dietary intake decreases the chances of skincancer related to exposure from sun.

Walnuts: The major actives found in walnut are - Elligtannins, Gamma-tocopherol, Alpha-linolenic acid, phytosterols and Melatonin. Laboratory studies show that consuming walnuts helps in breast cancer, colon tumor and prostate cancer. The studies also show decreased damage to DNA by regular consumption of walnut.

Do all chemicals, preservatives and additives in foods cause cancer?
Additives serve a wide variety of uses. For example, preservatives protect foods against deterioration and prevent growth of fungi and bacteria. Other additives help improve the texture and consistency of foods, keep them flowing freely when poured, or prevent them from drying out. Flavourings restore taste losses or can enhance the flavour or aroma of food. Emulsifiers ensure that oil and water in foods do not separate. Some commonly used preservatives which are doubted to have a relation with cancer are - Monosodium Glutamate (MSG), Sodium Benzoate, Sodium Nitrate and Sodium Nitrite.Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) is a phenolic antioxidant which prevents rancidity of fats and oils in food by protecting against lipid oxidation. High levels of BHA is found to create stomach tumor in laboratory animals. Some other chemicals which are found in canned foods and are known to perpetratecancer are -

  • Bisphenol A(BPA) can be found in reusable plastic food containers and the lining of food and beverage cans. Research shows that BPA exposure is linked to breastcancer, and has been shown to interfere with chemotherapy treatment for the disease.
  • Phthalates can be found in some plastic food containers and are considered as endocrine disruptors. Phthalate exposure has been linked to early puberty in girls, a risk factor for later-life breast cancer.
  • Some pesticides and herbicides used on foods we eat have been labeled as human or animal carcinogens.
  • Zeranol: Commonly found in the beef industry processing, it mimics an estrogen like action in the body and has been found carcinogenic in laboratory animals. This chemical is banned by the European Union.

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is used to produce food packaging. It was one of the first chemicals designated as known human carcinogen and has been linked to increased mortality from breast cancer and liver cancer among workers involved in its manufacture.

A lot is being talked about the Mediterranean diet and its anti-cancer properties. How helpful is the diet?
The Mediterranean diet got popular in 1990's for its protective qualities against heart ailments. Later it was found to be effective for other lifestyle disorders and cancer. Instead of accepting all the dishes that are offered in the name of a Mediterranean diet we should look for some basic concepts for which this cuisine is revered. These are - good to control weight gain, bad cholesterol and blood sugar.

A typical Mediterranean diet includes - abundant plant foods, fresh fruits, olive oil, cereals, wine, moderate consumption of fish, poultry and low amounts of red meat. The main benefit of this type of a diet is that it reduces inflammatory changes and oxidative stress in the body. By reducing inflammatory changes and delaying the age related changes in body it increases longevity and improves health. At least 7 types of cancers are related to obesity and in that context a Mediterranean diet helps to maintain a healthy glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity.

The biological mechanisms for cancer prevention associated with the Mediterranean diet have been related to the favourable effect of a balanced ratio of omega 6 and omega 3, essential fatty acids and high amounts of fibre, antioxidants and polyphenols found in fruits, vegetables, olive oil and wine.7) Five tips that you recommend one should follow for a healthy lifestyle.
Include fibers in your diet for healthy bowel movements. Regular bowels are important for detoxification.

Regular exercise is most important to boost immunity and avoid metabolic disorders like diabetes, hyper cholesterol, obesity, thyroid, hypertension etc. Yoga, paranyam are good for reducing stress, improving flexibility and correcting posture.

Nuts provides a good source of energy and other nutrients which are helpful. They help in the reduction and maintainence of weight. Nuts are advisable for controlling bad cholesterol. Nuts like walnut, almonds and pistachios are good for diabetics, hypercholesterolemia.

Intake of fruits and vegetables provides necessary antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. These help to neutralize the oxidative stress in the body and avoid damages to DNA, ageing.

Regular detox through green and herbal teas helps to maintain the balance in the body. Spa and Ayurveda therapies like body massages, shirodhara, chooran svedanam help to relax the body and mind. Lymphatic drainage therapy is also helpful to cleanse channels and get rid of toxins from the lymphatic system.

Purple-fleshed Potatoes Inhibit Tumor Cells

You may not have heard but bear in mind that potato juice has been used for ages as a natural pain reliever and to help with digestive problems and constipation.

Potatoes have a positive effect on the condition of muscles and joints, as well as skin, hair, and nails. They have a calming effect, but they also help boost immunity, positively affect blood vessels and the heart, lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and adjust metabolism and hematopoiesis.

Essential Vitamins and Minerals

Potatoes are loaded with potassium, magnesium, calcium, zinc, fluorine, phosphorus, copper, and iron. Your body needs these minerals for normal heart and blood functioning. Potatoes contribute to your healthy diet; just make sure not to prepare them with loads of fat. Steaming or baking will do fine. However, to best preserve the minerals and vitamins, try raw potato juice. Potato Juice is full of Vitamins A, C, and B, and protein!

Potato pigment also plays an important role. Dark yellow or orange potatoes are high in the carotenoid zeaxanthin, which is essential for good vision and can help cure certain eye diseases. Purple-fleshed potatoes contain high amounts of anthocyanins, which help inhibit tumor cells. According to a study published in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry in August 2015, baked purple-fleshed potatoes (a good source of anthocyanins and phenolic acids) slow the growth of colon cancer tumors in mice by increasing the apoptosis of the colon cancer stem cells. After four weeks, mice that consumed purple potato extract had about 50 percent fewer colon cancer tumors compared to the control group.

Treat Acne with Potatoes

Usually the same foods that are good for your health are good for your skin, and potatoes are no exception.

To help get rid of your pimples, put a slice of potato over each area where you notice pimples, let it sit there for 15 minutes, and then wash it off. For severe acne, prepare a potato mask. Peel and grate one larger potato, apply it as a mask to your skin, and let it work for 30 minutes before washing off.  Apply it twice a day – in the morning and in the evening. After one week, your skin should begin clearing up significantly.  Add raw potato drinks to also help clean your skin from the inside. According to the server Acne.org, potato treatments were rated an average of 4.7 out of 5 and 95% of members would recommend it to a friend.

Improve Hair Growth

To make your hair grow faster, add shine, and keep your scalp healthy, use fresh potato juice (about four potatoes will do) and gently massage it on your scalp. The massage should last about 10 minutes. Then use a wide-toothed comb and comb from the roots to the ends and let the mask sit. For better results, cover your hair with a shower cap or a plastic wrap. Rinse it off after 20 minutes. Apply this mask once a week.

How to Prepare Potato Juice

The juice of a potato is very alkaline. It helps to counteract excess acid for treating gastritis, colic, and gastric ulcers.

Before preparing the juice, make sure to get the healthiest potatoes possible with no pesticide residues, no sprouts, and no green marks, which contain toxins. Organic is preferred.

Always prepare and drink the juice fresh. Clean the potatoes thoroughly but don’t peel them; the skin contains a lot of those important vitamins and minerals. You will need a good performance juicer. The taste is not great, but you can add honey, herbs, or mix in carrots or apples. If you do not have a juicer, simply use a blender and make a smoothie to better preserve all of the nutrients from the potato skin. You can also add a raw potato to other smoothie recipes. If not a fan of smoothies — these would be pretty thick — then use a fine mesh strainer and press the mixture through it with a spatula to extract the juice.

Benefits

Weight Gain: Potatoes are primarily made of carbohydrates and contain very little protein. This makes it an ideal diet for those excessively lean or thin people who desperately want to put on weight. The vitamin content includes vitamin-C and B-complex, which also help in proper absorption of carbohydrates. That is one of the reasons that potatoes make up a large part of the diet of sumo wrestlers, as well as many other athletes who need large energy reserves to burn off in order to compete!

Digestion: Since potatoes predominantly contain carbohydrates, they are easy to digest and facilitate digestion. This property makes them a good diet for babies or for those who cannot digest hard food, but need energy. However, remember that eating too many potatoes on a regular basis may cause acidity over time. Potatoes also contain a considerable amount of fiber or roughage, more in raw potato and cold ones than boiled or hot ones. This stimulates peristaltic motion and increased secretion of gastric juices, which eases digestion and prevents conditions like constipation and protects the body from more serious conditions like colorectal cancer. Fiber is also connected with scraping cholesterol out of the arteries and blood vessels, thereby increasing heart health.

Skin Care: Vitamin-C and B-complex as well as minerals like potassium, magnesium, phosphorus and zinc are good for the skin. Apart from that, pulp obtained from crushed raw potatoes, mixed with honey, can work well in skin and face packs. This even helps to cure pimples and spots on the skin. Again, this pulp, if applied externally on burns, provides quick relief and faster healing. Smashed potatoes, and even water in which potatoes have been washed, are very good for softening and cleaning skin, especially around the elbows, and the back of the hands.

Scurvy: The vitamin-C present in potatoes can help prevent this disease, caused by a deficiency of vitamin-C. It is characterized by cracked lip corners, spongy and bleeding gums, and frequent viral infections. Although it has been eliminated from most first and second world countries with ready access to vitamin C, it still exists in certain nations of the world, so the prolific presence of potatoes in the world helps with this problem.

Rheumatism: There are two parts to the effect of potatoes on this condition. Vitamins like the calcium and magnesium help to provide relief from rheumatism. Also, water obtained from boiling potatoes can relieve the pain and inflammation of rheumatism. However, due to high starch and carbohydrate content, it tends to increase body weight which may have adverse effects on rheumatic people. It is a fine balance, so you must apply it as a helpful approach without consuming the potato itself.

Inflammation: Potatoes are very effective in reducing inflammation, both internal and external. Since it is soft, easily digested and has a lot of vitamin-C (a very good antioxidant that repairs tissue wear and tear), potassium and vitamin-B6, it can relieve any inflammation of the intestines and the digestive system. It is a very good dietary element for those who have mouth ulcers as well. Therefore, people who suffer from arthritis and gout can use potatoes for their anti-inflammatory impact, but again, since it can add to weight gain, which exacerbates these conditions, and is commonly eaten with meat and other rich foods that make gout worse, a fine balance must be struck.

Cancer Prevention: Certain types of potatoes, particularly red and russet ones, contain high levels of flavonoid antioxidants and vitamin A like zeaxanthin and carotenes, they can protect you against many types of cancer. Also, research at the Agricultural Research service has shown that potatoes contain a compound called quercetin, which has been proven to have anti-cancer and anti-tumor properties. Finally, the high levels of vitamin A and C both have antioxidant qualities that can protect your body from the devastating effects of cancer.

High Blood Pressure: Since high blood pressure can occur for a number of reasons that include diabetes, tension, indigestion, nutrient balance, food content and many others, different treatments are required. Luckily, potatoes can alleviate multiple possible causes; potatoes can be used to relieve high blood pressure due to tension. They can also treat indigestion due to abundance of vitamin-C and fiber within it, but they should be avoided if the high blood pressure is a result of diabetes. The fiber present in it is helpful in lowering cholesterol and improves functioning of insulin in the body, which aids in the lowering of blood pressure. This is because there is a direct relation between blood pressure and the glucose level in the blood; insulin helps to regulates that glucose level. Furthermore, the potassium found in potatoes (46% of daily requirement per serving) lowers blood pressure, since potassium functions as a vasodilator.

Potato benefits Brain Function: Proper functioning of the brain depends largely on the glucose level, oxygen supply, various components of the vitamin-B complex and certain hormones, amino acids and fatty acids like omega-3. Potatoes cater to almost all the needs mentioned above. They are high in carbohydrates, and thereby maintain good levels of glucose in the blood. This prevents the brain from letting fatigue creep in and it keeps your cognitive activity and performance high. Next, the brain needs oxygen, which is carried to the brain by the hemoglobin in the blood; its main constituent is iron. Potatoes contain iron as well. Therefore, they help deliver oxygen to the brain as well. There are a wide variety of vitamins and minerals in potatoes that positively affect the function of the brain, including phosphorus, zinc, and the B complex vitamins. The vasodilating properties of potassium have also been connected to stimulation of brain function due to increased blood flow to that essential organ.

Heart Diseases: Apart from the vitamins (B-complex, C), minerals and roughage, potatoes also contain certain substances called Carotenoids (lutein, zeaxanthin). Carotenoids are beneficial for heart health and the functioning of other internal organs. Again, since potatoes raises the glucose level in the blood and over-consumption may cause obesity, which puts pressure on your heart, you must be careful about how often you use potatoes for this health benefit. This method of preventing heart disease is not recommended for obese or diabetic people.

Kidney Stones: Kidney Stones, also known as Renal Calculi, are caused mainly due to increased levels of uric acid in the blood. In such cases, foods high in protein should be avoided, particularly animal proteins such as meat, turkey, shrimp, fish, eggs, and milk, as well as spinach, raw plantain, black grams and certain beans, which drastically increase the level of uric acid in the blood. Iron and calcium also contribute to forming the stones. Potatoes are rich in both of these so logically, they wouldn’t fit in as a preventative measure of kidney stones, but they also contain magnesium, which inhibits the accumulation or deposition of calcium (calcification) in the kidney and other tissues, thereby proving beneficial for treatment of renal calculi.

Diarrhea: They are an excellent component of an energy-rich diet for those suffering from diarrhea, since it is very easy to digest and contains mild roughage. However, eating too many potatoes can cause diarrhea due to the excessive ingestion of starch.

Other Benefits and Cautions: Juice from potatoes is a good treatment for burns, bruises, sprains, skin problems, ulcers, effects of narcotics,  prostate cancer, uterine cancer, and the formation of cysts or tumors. On the other hand, some care also needs to be taken while eating potatoes. Green potatoes are often poisonous, and so are potato leaves and fruits, as they contain alkaloids like solanine, chaconine and arsenic. An overdose of those chemicals could easily prove fatal. Moreover, the glycemic index (in simple words, the energy or sugar content) of potatoes is very high (above 80), so people that are obese, trying to lose weight, or diabetic should avoid eating potatoes. If eaten, potatoes are healthier when baked, rather than raw or fried.

However, don’t worry; those health risks affect a small part of the population of potato eaters in the world.  If you are otherwise fine and healthy, don’t forget that a bit of fat is not bad for you; it’s actually beneficial.  Don’t be afraid to enjoy some potato chips and French-fries while watching TV. You won’t become a couch potato if you eat in moderation!

Sea cucumbers are known as cancer warriors due to their known antitumor activity. Sea cucumbers are boneless saltwater animals found worldwide on the sea floor.

These sea creatures contain many anti-cancer substances. One of them -- Frondoside A -- works by antagonizing EP2 and EP4 receptors.

According to studies conducted by the University of Maryland Greenebaum Cancer Center, there is a growing body of evidence that Frondoside A may be a promising new agent with the potential to treat cancer and may also represent a potential new modality to antagonize EP4. Demonstrable anticancer activity has been confirmed in several models. EP4 supports the metastasis of lung and colon cancer in mice. EP4 also protects tumor cells from chemotherapy-induced apoptosis (programmed cell death).

Frondoside A may be suggested for use as a chemopreventive agent for metastatic cancer. By blocking the cancer growing receptors, tumors get starved and malignant cells do not survive. Concurring research, such as that conducted by the Pacific Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry, Far-Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Science, show that the death of tumor cells is caused by the fact that the sea cucumber activates proteins (caspases) that directly trigger the dying process in the tumor cells.

Sea cucumbers are being researched for use in treating a wide number of diseases, including breast and colon cancer. Specific research has confirmed the programmed death of the cancer cells of the prostate carcinogen. Similar success has been shown in the research of malignant cells in lungs, lymph nodes, the liver, the pancreas, the colon, breasts, and the brain, and in endometrial, melanoma, and other tumor types.

Sea cucumber extracts are being sold as dietary supplements in the form of powder or capsules. Due to their commercial value sea cucumbers are extensively harvested. Some of them are toxic, but some are edible and considered a delicacy, especially in Asian countries. Recently, more and more countries have been overharvesting sea cucumbers. It has started to cause severe damage. For example, Hawaii temporarily banned any large-scale commercial harvesting of sea cucumbers from January 10, 2016. Similar measures have been taken by India, Sri Lanka, Jamaica, and many other countries.
